Xbox Live had its early critics, namely Sony, which wondered whether Xbox Live would ever break even. “If I were Microsoft, I would spend my money first on selling units rather than building an online service,” Kazuo Hirai, the president and chief operating officer of Sony Computer Entertainment America, said in 2002.7

The risk would eventually pay off for Microsoft to the tune of more than $1 billion a year.
